10 reasons you're not losing weight - Part one of two

Posted: 05/09/2009 at 11:03pm by Rich Leigh, founder of Fat Free Fitness

Every day we talk to people who, perhaps like you, want to lose weight.

There are many reasons why people don't lose weight despite their best intentions.

Our trainers are experts at working out what these reasons are and getting past them, but if you aren't losing weight with our specialists and are going it alone, the following ten points may help you in your journey.

If you think we've missed something out, please feel free to mention it in the comments section!

1. Binge eating
Are you one of those people who sticks fantastically to healthy eating programmes... until the weekend? Or do you get home from a hard day's work where you've eaten brilliantly, only to head straight for the fridge? If this sounds like you, your weight loss will undoubtedly be affected by it.

We're creatures of habit, and our bodies are no different. Whether you exceed your calories throughout the day or all at once at night, you’re still exceeding the amount of calories your body needs to take on, and could be damaging your weight loss effort.

2. Alcohol
The mistake so many people make when trying to lose weight is forgetting the calories they take on through alcohol. You could be training like Rocky and eating like an Olympian, but if you’re chugging your way through a bottle of wine a night, you may well find your weight loss stagnates.

With 600+ calories in a bottle of wine, and a couple of hundred in every can of lager and cider, you can’t afford to ignore the impact it can have, especially if you’re used to drinking on many of the nights of the week.

3. Sleepy does it
Studies have shown that failing to get a good night’s sleep can affect your metabolism, and most obviously, stop you from recharging properly.

If you’re tired, you are more likely to reach for that quick-hit sugar rush than eat a balanced meal. A chocolate bar and a can of coke in the morning may seem ideal to give you a quick boost of energy, but if you’re going to be sat down letting those calories stew, you may want to think about sloping off to bed an hour earlier and beating the lack of energy at source.

4. Exercise
Quite simply, exercise can be the difference between reaching your goals and staying unhappy with your weight.

Every body is different. Knowing what works for one person to help them lose weight may not be right for somebody else, which is why our trainers are the best at what they do in Gloucestershire. However, if you are losing weight by yourself and just trying to do it through dieting alone, you may find your progress halts, or at best slows down. Becoming more active (and we’re not talking marathons here) can get your weight loss back on track, and is a great idea to incorporate from the very beginning.

5. Medical
As Personal Trainers, we don’t suffer excuses gladly (try hearing ‘go away, I think I’ve got a cold *best fake sneeze*’ for the hundredth time when calling on a client and you’ll know what we mean!).

However, there are times when your weight loss progress may be stunted by a medical problem you may not even be aware of. Amongst other reasons, diabetes, hormonal issues, thyroid disease, low iron count (anaemia) and yes, even the Monthly Visit We Men Must Not Talk Of can affect your willingness or ability to lose weight.

If you’re not feeling yourself, talk to your GP and see if they can help. 9 times out of 10, they can, and even if they can’t, you’ll have set your mind to rest.

Sooo, that’s it, Part One over, part two to come tomorrow. If your weight loss has stagnated and you could do with a helping hand to reach your goal, our unique 'Lbs for £s' programme could be just what you need – your weight loss will get back on track AND you’ll save money.

Great list so far, the alcohol one is so true. As soon as I cut my drinking down to just one day a week and never bingeing, I started losing weight!
